Ukraine: Economic Powerhouse (ft Chrystia Freeland), PM Burnham, Iran Stalemate, China's PLA Shakeup
In recent months, Ukraine has managed to hold its front lines while bringing the war to Russian territory through strikes on military and infrastructure targets. According to Economic Advisor to the President of Ukraine Chrystia Freeland, this reflects a broader shift in the country's position. As she explains, "Ukraine has been successful militarily because they realized this was existential. They had to decide: do we want to be a country or not?" She argues that Ukraine has moved beyond being seen solely as the victim of Russia's invasion and has become a necessary ally and a vital shield for Europe. Joining Sir Ben Wallace and Kate McCann, Freeland discusses why military resilience and economic strength are inseparable, how President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is laying the political foundations for long-term prosperity, the importance of international alliances, and why Poland's transformation offers a compelling model for Ukraine's postwar future. She also reflects on Ukraine's defense industry, the need to tackle corruption to attract investment, the challenge of bringing citizens home after the war, and why, in her view, "regular Ukrainians are more fiercely determined to building a free, prosperous country, even than their leadership is." The episode also covers the latest defense developments in the UK, renewed tensions between Iran and the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, and leadership changes within China's People's Liberation Army.
